In October, I travelled up to Coll (over 12 hours on the train!) to take part in a Selection Course with Project Trust. I stayed with a host family on the island, which was fun but also challenging...sharing a bathroom with four boys aged one to seven for example! Throughout the week we had to do a series of different tasks, including teaching, digging lazy beds, community work, and probably hardest of all a ten minute speech about an aspect of the island. With no internet, I had to find other ways of collecting information, primarily by talking to the local people. At the beginning of the week this seemed like a daunting task, but I soon realised that it had taught me a lot of skills which would be useful if I gained a placement abroad, and I am so glad that I pulled it off.
Less than a week later I received the news I had been anxiously awaiting all week...I have been selected to volunteer overseas in India!
After an initial outburst of excitement and phoning my family and friends, I realised that this is where the hard work begins: fundraising, training and preparing for my year. I will be updating this blog with my latest fundraising events, and letting you know how close to my goal of £5100 I am, so please keep reading!
